    Property, Flavour: Hot, pungent and bitter. Slightly poisonous.

    Channel Tropism: Acting on the liver, spleen and stomach channels.

    Effects: Dispelling pathogenic cold, drying dampness, soothing the liver, lowering adverse flow of qi, and relieving pain.


    1. Pathogenic cold in the interior:
      1. Gastric and abdominal cold pain.
      2. Headache and salivation due to cold of deficiency type in the middle-jiao and adverse flow of qi: with ginseng and dried ginger, as in Evodia Decoction.
      3. Chronic diarrhea due to deficiency of both spleen-yang and kidney-yang.
    2. Pain of the lower limbs due to cold-dampness.
    3. Vomiting and acid regurgitation:
      1. Cold in the stomach: with dried ginger and pinellia tuber.
      2. Hyperactivity of the liver-fire on the stomach with coptis.

    Dosage: 1.5-5g, decocted in water for oral doses. External use applicable.

    Precautions: Should not be given to patients with heat due to yin deficiency.
