Headache due to Loss of Blood

    Madam XXX Wang, 30.

Symptoms began after delivery. Due to excessive uterine bleeding, patient had seen headache, dizziness, palpitation, mild insomnia, and poor appetite. Menstrual period lasted only for two days. Sometimes headache would propagate because of overstrain. Symptoms had lasted for 4 months. Taut and thready pulse.

Syndrome diagnosed as uplifting of liver-yang due to deficiency of blood. Therapeutic principle is to nourish blood in order to calm endogenous wind. Prescription:

Rhizoma Gastrodiae 1.5qian, Fructus Tribuli 1.5qian, Radix Angelicae Sinensis 3qian, Radix Rehmanniae 3qian, Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata 3qian, Fructus Amomi 2qian, Radix Paeoniae Alba 3qin, Colla Corii Asini 2qian, Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong 1qian, Fructus Lycii 1.5qian, Flos Chysanthemi 1.5qian, Folium Mori 1.5qian, Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis 1.5qian, Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparata 1qian, Semen Ziziphi Spinosae 3qian, Semen Biotae 1.5qian and etc.

After seven doses patient reported disappearance of headache, with mild dizziness, better sleeping order and appetite. Second prescription was given:

Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae 3qian, Rhizoma Dioscoreae 4qian, Poria 2qian, Pericarplum Citri Reticulatae 1qian, Radix Rehmanniae 4qian, Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata 4qian, Fructus Amomi 0.5qian, Semen Ziziphi Spinosae 3qian, Radix Angelicae Sinensis 3qian, Flos Chysanthemi 1.5qian, Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparata 1qian, Radix Polygalae 1.5qian, and etc.

Too much uterine bleeding during delivery caused the brain to lose its nutrients. Malfunction of liver due to deficiency of blood caused liver-yang to upsurge. These two contributed to the main causes of headache. Palpitation and Insomnia were due to lack of heart-blood. Therefore the first prescription was meant to nourish blood and calm liver-fire, whereas the second one to make spleen and stomach tonic in order to produce qi and blood, with some tranquilizing effect.
